Color Studies
These are a series of color studies painted in ProCreate on an iPad. When I first started digital painting it was helpful to try and paint as quickly as possible, to try and capture the quality of light and color in the first few minutes of the painting, before 'zooming in' and refining the painting.
Three Bears Camping
After our first daughter, Hettie, was born, I wanted to paint something for her room using some of the techniques I've been practicing on the iPad. Her nursery is Camping themed, so I painted this scene of three bears camping in the woods.
Zappa
I did this study of Frank Zappa not only because I love his music, but also because of the influence he had on art and music’s role in society and government. He was an avid proponent of free expression in media and was very outspoken on many facets of public life.
Graphite on paper
Praying Mantis
The focus of this painting was to achieve a sense of photo-realism in the bokeh effect created by a narrow depth of focus. I was also interested in capturing the way light reflects and refracts color on droplets of water.
Acrylic on canvas
Puppy
Here was another attempt at creating a sense of depth by blurring the details of the background and rendering more detail in the foreground.
I was also trying to curb my tendency to over work details and give this painting a more impressionistic flair.

Mandolin
This was a still life painting of a mandolin in a dark room, framed by light penetrating the curtain in the background.
