Japanese Joinery Inspired Table

Other than the parametrically scripted Kumiko tile pattern, every part of this table was designed and crafted by hand, down to the friction-fitted Kumiko pieces themselves. This project was a welcome opportunity to design while building and gave me a chance to focus purely on form. Many of the cuts required an additional cutsom jig to be built as well, testing my ability to come up with a simple procedural solution to each component.

Oak Trout

This was my first ever attempt at woodcarving after my grandparents gave me their old set of chisels and gouges. I carved it from an Oak tree root that had been coppiced over several years. I thought this root made a beautiful form to carve with. The overlapping tendrils of the branches reminded me of a splash of water, hence a Trout leaping from the water was born.

Pig and Deer

I carved this relief with hand tools for my wife as a Christmas present when we first started dating. I think the dancing feeling of these two original characters perfectly capture what I felt at the time - the simple untainted joy of new love.

Bride and Groom

I carved these as wedding cake toppers for our wedding. Naturally it only made sense to bring these two characters back, but this time as fully three-dimensional forms. It was quite a challenge replicating their likeness and pose in 3D when I had already formed a mental image of their proportions in relief.

Fox Stool

I carved this fox stool for my brother and his wife as a gift for the birth of their new baby boy. The nursery they put together for little James is woodland themed so the fox will be right at home.

Owl House

This project gave me the chance to practice my interest in woodworking as well as ecological gardening. My hope was to attract some of the great horned owls that are native to the area. So far no luck in getting an owl to move in, but I had a good time building this owl house.

I decided to leave the wood surface untreated so as not to drive away any would-be inhabitants with a strong lacquer odor.
